Milford Health Inspectors Cite 16 Food Establishments for Major Code Violations

Health officials in Milford conducted rigorous inspections across 44 local food service establishments in July, citing 16 venues—including a prominent hotel and a grocery store—for critical public health and sanitation infractions. The enforcement actions underscore persistent regulatory scrutiny within the city's hospitality and dining sectors, matching the 16 commercial establishments cited for major violations during the previous month of June.

Under municipal and state health guidelines, regulatory infractions are categorized by risk level to prioritize consumer safety. Priority violations represent the most urgent hazards to food safety, directly contributing to the risk of foodborne illnesses, and require immediate corrective action within 72 hours. Priority foundation violations, which involve specific operational conditions or equipment needed to support compliance, carry a 10-day remediation deadline, while core violations address general facility maintenance and sanitation within a 90-day window.

Among the audited locations, Walnut Beach Coffee House, situated at 59-61 Naugatuck Ave., registered the highest volume of non-compliance issues during the July cycle. Health inspectors documented nine priority violations at the establishment, detailing multiple lapses in basic hygiene and operational protocols.

The priority findings at the coffee house included food handlers failing to wash their hands after eating, neglecting required glove changes, touching their hair and faces while shifting between work tasks, and handling ready-to-eat bread with bare hands. Inspectors also discovered blocked handwashing sinks cluttered with items, chlorine sanitizing solutions mixed at improper concentrations, hot water in the restroom failing to reach mandated temperatures, and cleaning chemicals stored directly hanging on food supplies. Temperature control failures were also noted regarding cooked eggs and turkey bacon.

In addition, the coffee house received nine priority foundation citations for deficiencies such as a lack of active managerial oversight, missing soap and paper towels at the kitchen hand sink, an unwashed meat slicer, and an unequipped reach-in cooler lacking a thermometer. Staff also failed to date-mark temperature-controlled foods held beyond 24 hours, stored cooked eggs completely covered inside the walk-in cooler, left sanitizer buckets unlabeled, and operated without sanitizer test strips or a clean ice machine interior. Health officials mandated a comprehensive retraining program on handwashing procedures, and a subsequent follow-up inspection determined that all violations had been successfully resolved. A facility manager stated that the business treats health regulations seriously and implemented immediate remedies across all cited areas.

Elsewhere in the city, Bella Napoli Pizza at 864 Boston Post Road was cited for two priority infractions. Inspectors identified improper sanitizer concentrations alongside out-of-compliance temperatures for food stored in the top section of its sandwich preparation units. Both matters were resolved on-site during the inspection, and facility management declined to offer comment.

Downtown establishment Blind Rhino, located at 21 Daniel St., incurred two priority citations after inspectors found uncovered food items in a walk-in cooler and critical temperature deviations involving raw and prepared meats, including hamburger, chicken, steak, and ham. The venue was also issued a priority foundation violation for a soiled can opener blade, with all items corrected on-site. Management did not provide a statement regarding the findings.

At Bridge House, located at 48 Bridgeport Ave., inspectors issued two priority violations after discovering moldy pepper jack cheese in storage and severely dented cans containing roasted red peppers, which present potential packaging integrity risks. The restaurant was additionally issued a priority foundation citation regarding an unclean ice machine interior, with all issues remedied on-site during the official visit.

Chain and quick-service establishments were also subject to enforcement. Burger King, located at 1292 Boston Post Road, was issued a single priority violation stemming from food items held at improper holding temperatures. Management at the location declined to comment on the inspection outcome.

Deli and neighborhood market operations were similarly cited during the July reviews. Hawar's Deli, located at 300 Bridgeport Ave., received one priority violation for improper chemical sanitizer strength and a priority foundation citation for failing to date-mark sliced ham and turkey. Both operational issues were corrected in the presence of the inspector.

Further citations were issued to Honeyspot Pizza 2 at 100 Landsdale Ave., which received a priority violation for inaccurate sanitizer concentrations and two priority foundation citations regarding incorrectly date-marked sliced ham and an unlabeled chemical spray bottle. Isabel's Bakery at 18 Lenox Ave. was cited for a priority violation concerning improper wash, rinse, and sanitization methods at its three-bay sink, alongside two priority foundation citations for unlabeled chemical bottles and labeled foods lacking required date marks.

Hospitality operations also fell under inspector scrutiny. The Hyatt Place Hotel at 190 Old Gate Lane received a priority violation after foods inside its grab-and-go display case were recorded at incorrect holding temperatures. The hotel additionally received two priority foundation violations for improper cooling procedures applied to leftover eggs and for the improper placement of an insect control light directly near food storage shelves. Management at the property declined to provide a statement.

At The Lazy Lobster, located at 6 Broadway, inspectors issued three priority citations after observing kitchen staff reheating prepared soups in a steam table rather than on a commercial stove, maintaining buttermilk at unsafe temperatures, and storing hand-pumped sanitizer on a shelf placed directly over food supplies. The seafood restaurant also received priority foundation citations for inadequate staff training documentation and missing paper towels at hand stations, with all violations corrected on-site.

Public health officials emphasize that routine monitoring and temperature enforcement remain critical defenses against foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli. Failure to maintain strict cold-holding below 41 degrees Fahrenheit or hot-holding above 135 degrees Fahrenheit creates environmental conditions where bacteria can rapidly multiply.

The Milford Health Department continues to conduct regular unannounced inspections across all licensed food service providers in the municipality. While several facilities corrected their procedural issues immediately in front of inspectors, public health authorities stress that maintaining daily active managerial control remains the single most important factor in preventing cross-contamination and protecting patrons from preventable foodborne risks.
