Trump proposes Camp David-style presidential retreat at his private Florida golf club

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he wants to turn one of his Florida golf courses into an official presidential retreat, a plan that would extend the use of his private business empire into the institutional machinery of the office he holds — and well beyond his own time in it.

Speaking during an unrelated event in the Oval Office, Trump described the project as "sort of a Camp David," the Maryland compound that has served as the traditional presidential getaway for decades. The comparison was deliberate: Trump cast the proposed retreat as a functional addition to the presidency rather than a personal perk, one that his successors could use for quiet weekends on the greens.

The property at the center of the proposal sits on Trump's private golf course in West Palm Beach, a short drive from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Fort Lauderdale's broader South Florida neighborhood. Trump said the plan has already been submitted to local officials, indicating that the idea has moved past casual conversation and into the municipal approval process.

Throughout his remarks, Trump emphasized logistics over luxury. He noted that the site is close to an airport and set apart from residential neighborhoods and tall buildings — features he described as security advantages. Tall structures and densely populated areas near a head of state complicate Secret Service planning, and Trump argued that this property already possesses many of the security characteristics needed to host presidents and world leaders.

The president also claimed that the concept was suggested by the United States Secret Service, the agency responsible for protecting him and his predecessors. He offered a simple rationale for why such a facility might be useful: "It seems that all presidents play golf." Trump, an avid golfer, has frequented his own courses throughout his presidency, and he predicted that the retreat would see heavy use. "It's a great idea, and it'll be used a lot," he said.

Yet the proposal raises questions that go beyond tee times. Placing an official presidential retreat on a property Trump personally owns would commingle the presidency with his private business ventures — and would do so in a way that outlasts his administration. The retreat would presumably remain in the Trump organization's portfolio after he leaves office, meaning future presidents and their guests could be spending official time at a venue financially tied to a former president.

That arrangement is the latest example of Trump seeking to leave a physical imprint on the presidency. He has previously pursued high-profile construction ambitions in Washington, including projects at the Kennedy Center and other landmark sites, a pattern critics describe as bulldozing long-standing norms in pursuit of a personal legacy.

Supporters of the idea, from Trump's own telling, view it as practical rather than controversial. If the property already meets much of the security threshold required to host commanders in chief, the argument goes, converting part of it into a formal retreat could be an efficient use of existing infrastructure rather than a costly new build.

But ethics experts have long warned that mixing official governmental functions with privately owned property can create conflicts of interest, even when the arrangement is disclosed. The question of who pays for upkeep, how the Secret Service secures a commercial venue, and whether profits flow to the owner while the facility is in official use are all issues that would need to be worked through.

There is also an unspoken weight hanging over this particular stretch of golf course. Trump did not mention during his remarks that the property was the site of an unsuccessful attempt on his life in 2024, when a gunman was apprehended near the course. That episode underscores both the security stakes involved and the personal history Trump has with the site.

For South Florida, the plan could carry symbolic and economic implications as well. An official retreat would elevate the region's status as a seat of presidential activity, complementing Mar-a-Lago's role as a winter White House and drawing more security personnel, staff, and official visitors to the area.

Whether the proposal advances will depend on local approvals, congressional scrutiny, and the reaction of watchdog groups that have closely tracked the intersection of Trump's presidency and his businesses. For now, the idea remains what Trump presented it as: a Camp David of his own making, on his own land, built for the presidents who come after him.
