Upcoming Freeport-Area Events Feature Diverse Lineup of Fundraisers, Live Arts, and Regional Entertainment

Freeport and surrounding communities across the region are preparing for an active slate of community gatherings, charitable fundraisers, and diverse entertainment offerings over the coming days. The scheduled lineup presents local residents with an expansive array of choices, spanning cause-driven floral sales, developmental combat sports, automotive exhibitions, civic golf outings, public arts celebrations, and regional live performances.

Kicking off the weekend activities, VOICES of Stephenson County is holding its annual Fall Mum Sale to raise essential funding for its community assistance programs. Revenue generated from the floral market directly aids the organization in providing comprehensive support services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Customers can select from a stock of roughly 1,000 potted mums available in red, orange, white, yellow, and purple varieties, with individual plants priced at $13.

The mum sale is hosted inside the first storefront on the right at Lincoln Mall, located at 1255 W. Galena Ave. in Freeport. Operating hours for the sale are scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. on Sept. 9, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 10, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 11. Shoppers visiting the mall on the afternoon of Sept. 9 can also experience musical entertainment provided by Ukulele Express from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Combat sports enthusiasts will have an opportunity to watch high-level mixed martial arts on Friday evening as Cage Fury Fighting Championships stages "CFFC 161: Aladi vs. Lleshi" at the Hard Rock Casino Rockford, situated at 7801 E. State St. in Rockford. Established in 2006, the organization serves as a premier developmental proving ground for rising martial artists across the country. The evening's headlining contest features reigning interim flyweight champion Moshe "Straw Hat" Aladi defending his crown against former NextGen titleholder Jerry Lleshi. Doors open at 5 p.m. ahead of the 6 p.m. card, with tickets priced at $99.95.

Live regional music will also be widely available on Friday evening. In Dakota, acoustic musician Kristin Toon will deliver an outdoor patio performance at Route 75 Bar & Grill, located at 320 E. Main St., playing a three-hour set from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Further west in Lena, RAMI award-winning musical group Blue Steel will take the stage at 8 p.m. at the Lena Brewing Company, located at 9426 W. Wagner Road. The group is known for its energetic sound blending classic country and hard-edged rock, driven by dual male and female lead vocals reinforced by intricate three-part harmonies.

Saturday morning shifts focus to local animal welfare with the running of the Bruce Nielsen Memorial Car Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Friends Forever Humane Society, located at 966 W. Rudy Road in Freeport. The rain-or-shine, family-friendly gathering directly benefits the shelter's operational mission and the homeless animals under its care, with well-behaved, leashed dogs invited to attend alongside their owners.

In addition to a judged vehicle competition recognizing Top 40 award recipients, the car show includes food vendors, music, raffles, and door prizes. Attendees will also have access to informational demonstrations conducted by the Stephenson County K9 Unit, High Flying Huskies, Freeport ROTC, and Operation Fallen Flag. Spectator admission is entirely free, while vehicle entry fees are set at $10 for preregistration or $15 upon arrival at the gate.

For community members looking to take to the links, the "Tee off on Crime 2026" charity golf outing will run Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Freeport Club, located at 1614 S. Park Blvd. The entry fee of $125 per player includes 18 holes of golf with cart access, entry to a Bloody Mary bar, lunch, and specialty pizza samplings courtesy of the Wood Pellet Pizza Oven Company. The event features interactive course novelties, including the Gahm Enterprises Golf Ball Launcher and Crime Scene Bunkers, while non-golfers can contribute by sponsoring law enforcement personnel through the "Sponsor a Cop" program.

Families with young children can visit the Freeport Public Library at 100 E. Douglas St. on Saturday morning for the interactive "PAWS to Read" program. Running from 11 a.m. to noon, the literacy initiative provides visitors with the unique chance to read stories directly to certified dogs from Therapy Dogs International in a welcoming setting.

Cultural festivities continue Saturday evening with "Freedom on the Rocks: A Celebration of United We Create," marking the milestone of America at 250. Hosted from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Freeport Arts Plaza at 111 E. Douglas St., the red, white, and blue celebration features the formal unveiling of the United We Create Mural as well as the presentation of the yearly Cultural Leadership Awards.

Admission to Freedom on the Rocks is $50, with all proceeds earmarked to assist the Freeport Art Museum in maintaining free daily admission policies and supplying hands-on creative programming for visitors. Attendees can take advantage of an American-style cookout supplied by Marketside Meats & Deli, baked goods from Bezzie's Bakery, a full-service cash bar, and live music provided by the Highland Community College Big Band.

Comedy fans can head to the Hard Rock Casino Rockford on Saturday evening for a stand-up performance by television personality and comedian Jonathan Van Ness. Scheduled for an 8 p.m. start with doors opening at 7 p.m., the general admission performance highlights humor, personal storytelling, and queer joy. Tickets for the 21-and-over event range between $42 and $66, with valid photo identification required at the entrance.

Simultaneously on Saturday night, regional rock group Fast Lane will entertain patrons at the Best Dam Bar, located at 13965 Best Road in Davis. The band will perform a four-hour set of energetic rock covers running from 8 p.m. until midnight.

Looking ahead to the coming week, educational programming will be provided by Galena-based historical reenactment collective Women of Courage and Commitment through their presentation titled "Women of Courage: World War I." The production relies on researched history and costumed performance to depict the real-world experiences of four prominent figures from the era: Emma Goldman, Edith Cavell, Gertrude Bell, and Mata Hari. Organizers note that seating for the 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. session is limited, making early registration strongly encouraged.
