TxDOT Schedules Major Nightly Lane Closures Across Key Central Texas I-35 Stretches

Texas transportation officials are advising Central Texas motorists to prepare for substantial travel delays as extensive infrastructure maintenance triggers a series of overnight lane closures along critical corridors of Interstate 35. The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed that the scheduled operations are set to begin on the evening of Sunday, September 13, creating modified traffic patterns and restricted lane access across several heavily traveled stretches of the regional highway network.

According to official advisories released by the department, one primary segment slated for nightly shutdown spans Interstate 35 between Oltorf Street and State Highway 45 Southeast. Construction crews will close both northbound and southbound travel lanes starting at 8 p.m. each evening, keeping the restrictions active until 5 a.m. the following morning. These nightly operations are scheduled to run continuously through the morning of Thursday, September 17.

Transportation officials communicated through public updates on social media platform X that the southern corridor restrictions are required to facilitate crucial roadway paving and barrier installation work. Executing these structural improvements requires positioning heavy machinery directly within the primary thoroughfare, prompting engineers to adjust standard traffic configurations to safeguard road crews while accelerating the pace of highway rehabilitation.

Due to the intensive nature of the work between Oltorf Street and SH 45 SE, Interstate 35 will experience major capacity constraints, narrowing to only a single open travel lane in several locations along the construction zone. In addition to mainlane restrictions, project managers confirmed that multiple entrance and exit ramps connecting adjacent streets to the highway will be closed overnight, preventing standard access onto the interstate.

Concurrently, state highway planners have scheduled a second major set of nightly lane closures further north along the Interstate 35 corridor. Both the northbound and southbound mainlanes will undergo construction closures between Airport Boulevard and 12th Street, affecting a central transit artery that carries significant regional traffic through the Austin metropolitan area.

The operational schedule for the Airport Boulevard to 12th Street section will mirror the southern segment, operating from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly from Sunday through Thursday. The simultaneous execution of these two major work zones is anticipated to cause cumulative delays for long-distance haulers, regional freight carriers, and late-night cross-town commuters traveling across the central portion of the state.

Transportation authorities also noted that structural impacts in the central zone will extend beyond the primary interstate lanes. The Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard bridge will be subject to intermittent nightly closures while work is underway. Furthermore, motorists utilizing the northbound and southbound frontage roads in the vicinity of the Airport Boulevard and 12th Street corridor should anticipate varying lane closures that will temporarily impede local access.

Beyond the work planned directly on the interstate system, state transportation personnel announced a separate street-level closure along Cesar Chavez Street. Road crews will close the section of Cesar Chavez Street situated between Springdale Road and Brushy Street to allow specialized teams to complete critical underground utility operations.

The municipal utility work along Cesar Chavez Street will operate on a slightly different schedule, closing the roadway between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night from Monday through Thursday. Because this work starts earlier in the evening and extends later into the morning than the highway closures, local drivers traveling through East Austin are advised to prepare for localized traffic diversions and reduced surface-street mobility.

Highway planners intentionally structured the extensive Interstate 35 closures during overnight hours to mitigate the economic and logistical impact on daytime commuter traffic. By scheduling paving, concrete barrier placement, and utility operations between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., construction teams aim to accomplish major infrastructure upgrades during windows of lower overall traffic volume.

Despite the nocturnal scheduling, the combination of mainlane bottlenecks, ramp closures, and frontage road limitations presents logistical difficulties for overnight logistics networks and late-shift workers. Funneling interstate traffic down to a single open lane frequently produces localized congestion, especially when unexpected detours redirect commercial motor vehicles onto alternate frontage routes.

Work zone safety remains a primary focus for highway officials and emergency personnel throughout the construction period. The combination of heavy road equipment, active worker zones, and sudden lane reductions heightens the risk of collisions if drivers fail to exercise appropriate caution. Motorists traveling through the active zones are urged to obey posted work-zone speed limits, avoid mobile device distractions, and remain alert for sudden stops.

Motorists planning to travel along Interstate 35 or through the Cesar Chavez Street corridor between September 13 and September 17 are advised to check real-time traffic updates from TxDOT before departing. Transportation planners recommend identifying alternate north-south bypass routes or adjusting travel schedules to minimize the likelihood of encountering construction-related delays across Central Texas.
