A catastrophic wrong-way collision along a rural West Texas highway claimed the life of a young motorist and left two others hospitalized with varying degrees of injury over the weekend, according to state law enforcement authorities. The fatal two-vehicle incident, which occurred under the jurisdiction of the Texas Department of Public Safety, prompted a major emergency response along a key regional transit corridor in Terry County during the early morning hours of Saturday.

State troopers officially identified the deceased driver as 20-year-old Halee Williams, a resident of Brownfield, Texas. Emergency personnel arriving at the scene discovered Williams unresponsive following the severe frontal impact. Due to the catastrophic nature of the trauma sustained during the crash, the young woman was pronounced dead directly at the site of the collision before any emergency medical evacuation could take place.

According to official incident reports released by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the wreck was first reported to regional emergency dispatchers at approximately 3:30 a.m. on September 12. First responders and law enforcement units rushed to the scene along U.S. Highway 62, pinpointing the location of the wreckage at a rural stretch situated just under half a mile southwest of County Road 670.

Preliminary findings established by state highway patrol investigators indicate that Williams was operating a 2019 Chevrolet Trax sport utility vehicle prior to the incident. Investigators determined that the vehicle was traveling northeast while positioned directly inside the designated southwestbound travel lanes of U.S. Highway 62, placing the compact SUV on a direct collision course against oncoming traffic.

As the Chevrolet Trax continued its trajectory in the opposing lanes of travel, it collided head-on with an approaching 2017 Ford F-150 pickup truck that was moving southwest in its correct lane. The violent energy generated by the high-impact frontal collision resulted in extensive structural damage to both vehicles and triggered an immediate vehicle fire that rapidly engulfed Williams' SUV in flames.

Emergency responders and local fire crews worked diligently to secure the immediate area and extinguish the vehicle blaze, allowing crash reconstruction investigators to inspect the physical wreckage. In their preliminary assessment, Department of Public Safety officials noted that it remained unclear whether Williams had been wearing a safety belt prior to or during the severe collision.

The driver of the oncoming Ford F-150 pickup truck was identified by state authorities as 38-year-old Rodrigo Lopez, a resident of Denver City, Texas. Lopez sustained serious, incapacitating physical injuries when the compact SUV struck his truck head-on, requiring urgent and extensive medical intervention from arriving paramedics at the scene.

Following initial triage and stabilization at the rural crash site, emergency medical personnel transported Lopez to University Medical Center in Lubbock, which serves as the primary regional trauma facility for the surrounding South Plains area. Medical staff admitted the Denver City driver to provide specialized trauma care for his severe injuries.

Traveling as a passenger inside Lopez's Ford pickup was 32-year-old Breanna Cobbs, who is a resident of Hobbs, New Mexico. While the driver of the pickup suffered major trauma, Cobbs managed to survive the violent head-on impact with what investigators formally classified as minor physical injuries.

Despite the relatively lesser severity of her initial injuries compared to those of the driver, emergency medical services also transported Cobbs to University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was admitted to the hospital for comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and professional medical oversight to treat her injuries following the traumatic wreck.

As part of the standard collision reconstruction and occupant safety analysis, state troopers documented the safety restraint usage of everyone involved in the crash. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety's findings, neither Lopez nor Cobbs was utilizing an active seatbelt safety restraint inside the pickup truck when the collision took place.

Troopers examining the physical surroundings and the roadway surface noted that external weather conditions were not an apparent hazard during the fatal encounter. Official reports confirmed that atmospheric conditions were clear and the highway asphalt was completely dry at the time of the 3:30 a.m. impact, ruling out rain, slick road conditions, or heavy fog as primary factors.

While clear environmental conditions have been established, state troopers emphasized that the broader circumstances surrounding the collision remain subject to comprehensive analysis. Investigators are continuing to examine what underlying factors caused Williams to enter the incorrect lane and travel against oncoming highway traffic, with the Texas Department of Public Safety maintaining an active and ongoing inquiry into the fatal Terry County crash.
