The deceased has been identified as Kamarion Coleman of Woodridge, according to local investigators. The incident took place in the 900-block of Willow Court, where police responded to reports of shots fired around 11 p.m. In addition to the 18-year-old who was killed, another 18-year-old from Joliet was airlifted to a Chicago hospital in critical condition. The two other teenagers, aged 15 and 16, are expected to recover from their injuries.
Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have not yet disclosed the circumstances that led to the shooting. However, they have confirmed that the incident was connected to a gathering at the park. Emani Love, a resident who lives across the street from the park, described the gathering as peaceful before the gunfire erupted.
"I heard the gunshots, but before that, I was walking my dog. And she's an emotional support animal, so she kind of was just steady looking over towards that way, you know, like, 'What's going on?' Because it was a lot of music and, you know, I think a barbeque," Love said.
The park, which Love has called home for the past couple of years, is known to be a popular destination for families, neighbors, and dog walkers. The sudden violence has shocked the community, with many expressing their grief and sympathy for those affected by the shooting.
"It's so sad, you know, for a young life to be taken that soon, especially, you know, in this neighborhood," Love said. She also extended her condolences to the families involved in the tragedy. "It's just it's so tragic. Like, it's so sad to hear that. And I'm really sorry to everybody that was involved. It's horrible news."
As of now, police have not announced whether anyone has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. However, they have emphasized that the incident was not random.
