Nepal in Urgent Alert as Flood Death Toll Tops 900, Threat of New Flooding Looms

The situation in Nepal remains critical as the death toll from the recent catastrophic floods has now exceeded 900, with thousands more reported missing. Rescuers are working tirelessly to clear debris and restore essential services, while authorities warn of the possibility of fresh flooding as the situation continues to deteriorate.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority in Nepal reported that the death toll has climbed to 903, with 4,247 still reported missing. Across the border, Chinese authorities have reported 16 deaths and 546 missing on their side of the border.

Early Sunday morning, authorities issued fresh flood warnings to residents via their phones, after water levels in the Bhotekoshi River began to rise once more. The warnings came following an alert from Chinese authorities, who informed their Nepalese counterparts of increased water flow upstream.

Survivors in flood-affected districts are struggling to come to terms with the destruction. Govind Shreshta, a resident of a flood-hit village, described the ongoing struggle, "Sometimes they say a flood is coming, then we have to run again to higher ground, even at night. There is also rain. It's really difficult for me. I have a 72-year-old father and 70-year-old mom. I must carry them and I am exhausted."

In Dhading, one of the worst-hit regions, some residents have begun returning to their homes to see what can be salvaged. The scene is one of desolation, with walls washed away by the floods and residents shoveling mud and rubble off balconies and window frames. One man, who had returned for his chickens, found them alive and tied them up to take with him.

The floodwaters have also caused significant damage to infrastructure, including a key power plant that serves over 20,000 people across four districts. Workers began inspecting the facilities on Sunday to survey the extent of the damage.

The U.S. State Department has reported that there are currently 85 Americans unaccounted for in Nepal, with nine having been safely evacuated. "Right now we're in communication with them directly to assess those needs," said U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott. "We have a disaster area response advisor actually on the ground right now, in communication to see how best we can offer assistance."

The State Department has activated $3.6 million in emergency humanitarian assistance, including up to three months of food for up to 10,000 households.

The missing also include hundreds of people from over a dozen countries who were in the region to work, visit the mountains, or make a pilgrimage to a sacred peak. On Sunday, Chinese state media reported that 261 foreigners were missing in Tibet, including over a hundred Nepalis and others from around the world.

The floods began after a glacial collapse high in the Himalayan region, with scientists who studied satellite images saying that bedrock underneath a glacier had collapsed, taking part of the glacier with it. The rockfall was so extreme that it registered as magnitude 5.2, causing a torrent of water that swept buildings, bridges, and earth downstream in Tibet and Nepal.

Nepal's foreign minister has called for a global response to climate change, saying that Nepal is bearing a disproportionate share of its impact. The disaster serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect vulnerable communities around the world.
