Prosecutor Declines Charges in Fabricated Child Abuse Claim Targeting Pete Buttigieg and His Family

A woman who made an unfounded child abuse report that prompted government authorities to question Pete and Chasten Buttigieg’s young children and temporarily separate the family will not face criminal charges, according to officials. The decision closes the prospect of local prosecution following an incident that saw law enforcement and child welfare personnel arrive at the former transportation secretary’s residence to investigate claims that were subsequently proven false.

The determination was made by Marshall County Prosecutor E. Nelson Chipman Jr. in Indiana, who concluded that criminal charges could not be sustained against the individual responsible for the report. According to official correspondence, the prosecutor determined that the state could not establish the necessary criminal intent required for a conviction, as evidence indicated the caller was experiencing severe psychological and substance-related issues at the time the complaint was lodged.

In a July communication sent to the Indiana State Police, Chipman acknowledged that the complaint initiated an invasive and disruptive investigation into an innocent household. However, the prosecutor explained that the woman’s extensive history of alcohol misuse, combined with documented hallucinations and delusional thought patterns, prevented authorities from proving beyond a reasonable doubt that she knowingly and deliberately submitted a fraudulent report.

Public records identify the woman only by the initials "TJ." Authorities reported that she made the emergency complaint while visiting family members in Indiana before eventually traveling back to Alabama. Prosecutors noted that she had exhibited behavior consistent with responding to auditory hallucinations and had expressed grandiose beliefs during her time in the area.

Her interactions with law enforcement extended beyond the child welfare report during her brief stay in Indiana. Records indicate that she had at least three separate encounters with local police officers, including an incident that resulted in her arrest on an allegation of domestic battery. During that arrest, law enforcement personnel documented that her blood-alcohol concentration had reached 0.32 percent.

The false complaint prompted an immediate and intrusive response at the Buttigieg home in Michigan, where a Michigan State Police trooper and a Child Protective Services caseworker were dispatched to the property. Upon their arrival, officials informed Pete Buttigieg that he was legally prohibited from being left alone with the couple's 4-year-old twins until each child could undergo separate, independent forensic interviews.

To comply with the immediate restrictions imposed by the responding caseworkers and law enforcement, the twins were placed overnight in the care of Chasten Buttigieg’s parents. The former cabinet official described the resulting separation as deeply painful, noting that the twenty-four hours that elapsed before the children could safely return home represented one of the darkest periods of his life.

Investigators with the Michigan State Police subsequently confirmed that the allegations were entirely meritless and officially closed the matter as a false report. In addressing the outcome, state law enforcement officials underscored the broader hazards associated with fabricated allegations, warning that unfounded complaints squander critical public resources and divert protective workers away from genuine child welfare emergencies.

Pete Buttigieg addressed the ordeal publicly in June, characterizing the fabricated report as a cruel, politically driven hoax. He noted that one of the responding law enforcement officers on the scene similarly expressed the view that political animus appeared to be a motivating factor behind the unwarranted complaint.

Subsequent reviews of internal documentation published by news outlets exposed substantial systemic failures and communication gaps across state borders. Records revealed that child welfare authorities in Indiana forwarded the initial complaint to their counterparts in Michigan without including the reporting party’s name, contact details, or verifying information.

Following the initial referral, Michigan law enforcement approached the Buttigieg household and subjected the family to restrictions before taking steps to authenticate the origin of the complaint. Records show that investigators in Michigan waited six full days after their initial visit to the Buttigieg residence before attempting to locate or identify the individual who had phoned in the accusation.

Child welfare professionals who examined the inter-agency records observed that a combination of poor judgment and deficient coordination between the Indiana and Michigan agencies severely compounded the harm inflicted on the family. Experts pointed out that the lack of fundamental vetting allowed an unverified, anonymous claim to disrupt a household and force young children into forensic interrogations without their parents present.

The systemic breakdowns surrounding the response have since prompted formal scrutiny at the state level. The Michigan attorney general's office launched an active inquiry to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the unvetted accusation and to determine whether state protocols were properly followed. A representative for the attorney general confirmed that the investigation into the matter remains open and ongoing.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of public and political scrutiny that Pete and Chasten Buttigieg have encountered since entering the national spotlight. Over the course of several years, conservative commentators and Republican politicians have frequently targeted the couple’s marriage and family life, using their household as a focal point for political debate.

Such scrutiny previously emerged in 2021, when Pete Buttigieg faced widespread political criticism and ridicule from opponents for taking parental leave to help care for the couple's premature newborn twins. Observers have noted that the couple's domestic life has routinely been politicized rather than respected as a private family unit.

A spokesperson for Pete Buttigieg declined to comment specifically on the Indiana prosecutor’s decision to withhold formal charges. However, representatives for the family had previously underscored that they are continuing to seek clarity, transparency, and full accountability regarding how an unverified claim was permitted to escalate so severely.
