Law enforcement authorities in Tippecanoe County are actively investigating a pair of early morning commercial property crimes that occurred over the weekend in West Lafayette, Indiana, where perpetrators specifically targeted retail inventories of electronic smoking products. The consecutive criminal incidents, which unfolded within an approximate twenty-four-hour window, have drawn intense scrutiny from local investigators due to the shared geographic area and the identical nature of the stolen merchandise.
According to official incident reports and statements provided by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department, the sequence of weekend crimes began early Sunday morning with an aggressive armed robbery and was followed early Monday morning by a forced-entry burglary. In both instances, the primary objective of the perpetrators appeared to be the theft of nicotine vape cartridges from commercial establishments located along well-traveled roadways in the area.
The first encounter took place at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Sunday at the Marathon Friendly Market, an establishment situated at 1908 Sagamore Parkway W. A 22-year-old retail clerk was on duty during the overnight shift and had stepped away from the cash register to walk toward the outside fuel pumps when he was suddenly confronted by an armed man carrying a heavy sledgehammer.
Sheriff's officials indicated that the suspect immediately charged directly at the young employee as soon as he saw him in the outdoor area. Faced with an immediate threat, the clerk turned around and attempted to run back toward safety, but he lost his footing and fell to the ground during his retreat, leaving him prone on the pavement.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Terry Ruley reported that the armed assailant walked up to the clerk while the worker was still lying on the ground. The suspect then raised the sledgehammer into the air in a threatening posture as if preparing to strike the fallen clerk; however, investigators confirmed that the dramatic motion was merely a bluff designed to intimidate the worker rather than cause physical harm.
Leaving the frightened employee unharmed on the pavement, the robber entered the convenience store to carry out the theft. Once inside the retail space, the perpetrator wielded the sledgehammer to strike and smash through a secured glass display case that housed the business's collection of electronic smoking devices and vaping supplies.
Chief Deputy Ruley confirmed that the robber seized numerous vape cartridges from the shattered enclosure, including several boxes filled with nicotine vapes, before making his exit from the building. The suspect subsequently fled the property on foot, and investigators noted that there has been no motor vehicle linked to the suspect or the robbery scene.
Following the robbery at the Marathon Friendly Market, the sheriff's office released descriptive details regarding the physical appearance of the suspect. The individual is described in official police records as a white male who stands approximately 6 feet tall, has a slender physical build, weighs roughly 170 to 180 pounds, and features dark blond hair.
Almost exactly twenty-four hours after the violent encounter at the gas station, a second retail crime was reported just nine blocks away from the original scene. This second incident occurred early Monday morning at the Smoke Time tobacco store, an enterprise located at 2827 U.S. 52 W., where an intruder forced entry into the business to execute a burglary.
Investigators reviewing security surveillance footage from the tobacco shop observed two men standing outside the commercial property at around 2:10 a.m. on Monday. The video recordings showed that one of the men subsequently walked away from the immediate area, while the second individual proceeded to break into the tobacco store.
After successfully gaining entry into the Smoke Time retail space, the intruder focused his efforts on obtaining merchandise, stealing an unspecified quantity of nicotine vape cartridges before making his escape. The breach marked the second time in two consecutive overnight periods that a West Lafayette business suffered the loss of vape products to thieves.
The striking similarities regarding the timing, geographical proximity, and specific items stolen have led detectives to evaluate whether the two weekend occurrences might be connected. Chief Deputy Ruley stressed that the investigations remain in their early stages, noting that law enforcement officials are not yet ready to confirm whether the Monday burglar and the Sunday robber are the exact same individual.
Even without an official determination connecting the identities of the suspects, sheriff's department officials acknowledge the clear parallels between the two events. Both crimes transpired within a nine-block radius, occurred during early morning hours around 2:00 a.m., and concentrated exclusively on securing commercial stocks of nicotine vape supplies.
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department is urging the public to come forward with any relevant information, observations, or surveillance recordings that could assist detectives in identifying the persons responsible. Individuals with knowledge regarding either the Marathon Friendly Market robbery or the Smoke Time burglary are asked to contact the department directly at 765-423-9321.
In addition to calling investigators directly, community members who prefer to share details while keeping their identities protected may provide anonymous tips through the We-Tip Hotline by dialing 800-782-7463. Authorities are hopeful that assistance from local residents will help bring a resolution to both ongoing criminal cases.
