An Odessa man has been taken into custody and formally accused of aggravated kidnapping after authorities say he forced his former wife into his vehicle at knifepoint and threatened to take her life. The incident, which unfolded across several city blocks on a Wednesday evening, resulted in a harrowing escape by the victim and a subsequent law enforcement response in Ector County.
The suspect, identified by law enforcement officials as 41-year-old Jeremiah Ray Lopez, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping following the reported roadside attack. Lopez was subsequently transported to the Ector County jail, where he was processed on the felony charge before securing his release after posting a court-ordered $75,000 surety bond.
Details regarding the violent confrontation were made public after the Ector County Sheriff’s Office released an official incident report outlining the allegations brought forward by the victim. According to the investigative narrative documented by responding deputies, the sequence of events began on a Wednesday evening when the suspect allegedly ambushed his former spouse while she was traveling on foot.
According to the official sheriff's office documentation, the 47-year-old victim informed investigators that she had been walking near the intersection of 29th Street and Moss Avenue in Odessa shortly before 8:00 p.m. As she proceeded along the roadway, a truck operated by Lopez suddenly pulled up directly alongside her, interrupting her route.
Deputies reported that Lopez immediately confronted his former wife from inside the vehicle, ordering her to get inside the truck. According to the victim's statement to investigators, Lopez warned her that if she refused to comply with his demands and get into the vehicle, he was going to inflict physical harm upon her.
Faced with the immediate ultimatum and cognizant of previous instances of violence involving the suspect, the woman made the decision to enter the passenger compartment of the truck. The sheriff's office report specifically noted that the victim's compliance was driven by her firsthand knowledge of Lopez's past history of violent behavior, leading her to believe his threats were genuine.
Once the woman was inside the cab of the truck, the situation escalated rapidly into a life-threatening encounter. According to the allegations detailed in the incident report, Lopez produced a knife and placed the weapon directly against the victim's throat, physically restraining and terrifying her within the confines of the vehicle.
While holding the bladed weapon firmly against her neck, Lopez allegedly issued a direct and explicit verbal threat against her life. The official law enforcement report states that the suspect told the victim, "I'm going to kill you," punctuated by an expletive, leaving the woman in imminent fear for her personal safety.
The suspect then continued driving the vehicle through the area, traveling north along Moss Avenue toward the vicinity of 57th Street with the victim trapped inside. As the truck moved through the roadway, the woman sought an opportunity to break free from the vehicle and escape the ongoing assault.
A chance for escape presented itself when Lopez slowed the truck down as they approached the intersection of Moss Avenue and 57th Street. Seizing the reduction in vehicle speed, the victim made an emergency decision to leap from the passenger side of the moving truck onto the roadway in an effort to save her life.
The escape attempt was met with immediate physical resistance from Lopez. According to the victim’s account provided to sheriff's deputies, as she attempted to throw herself clear of the truck, Lopez swung the knife at her and reached out to physically grab her hair in a bid to prevent her from exiting the vehicle.
Despite the suspect's efforts to hold her and the dangerous swing of the blade, the woman successfully broke free from his grasp and cleared the truck, landing on the street. Following her leap, the victim encountered a bystander who intervened to offer immediate assistance in the wake of the violent encounter.
The Good Samaritan transported the shaken victim to a nearby Stripes convenience store, providing her with a secure location away from the immediate area of the confrontation. Upon arriving at the convenience store, the woman was able to contact emergency dispatchers and place a call to 911 to report the abduction and assault.
Deputies with the Ector County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene in response to the emergency call. While conducting their initial response and canvassing the surrounding neighborhood, law enforcement personnel observed Lopez driving his truck in circles around the immediate area.
Deputies quickly executed a traffic stop on the vehicle, intercepting Lopez without further reported incident. Following an on-scene investigation and corroboration of the victim's statements, deputies placed the 41-year-old suspect under arrest on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping.
Lopez was subsequently transported to the Ector County detention center, where he was booked into the facility on the felony charge. Records indicate that he was later released from custody after satisfying the conditions of a $75,000 surety bond, while the case remains under the jurisdiction of local legal authorities.
