New York Ranks Eighth in National Public School Study Amid Nation-Leading Education Spending

New York has secured a position among the top ten public school systems in the United States, earning the eighth spot overall in a comprehensive nationwide evaluation conducted by the personal finance outlet WalletHub. The assessment examined public education across the country through dozens of distinct indicators, measuring how effectively states support their primary and secondary learning environments.

While New York earned a high overall placement, the findings revealed a distinct contrast between financial commitments and outcomes. The Empire State ranked first in the entire country for school spending, reflecting a substantial fiscal allocation toward its educational infrastructure. However, despite leading the nation in funding, the state received lower comparative evaluations in specific categories, including overall academic quality and student safety.

In the final scoring tally, New York achieved a cumulative score of 59.52 out of a possible 100 points. This total placed the state eighth among all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The result highlights that while New York maintains one of the country's most well-resourced educational systems, disparities persist between the volume of investment and certain performance measures across districts.

The study by WalletHub analyzed school performance across all 50 states and the District of Columbia by evaluating 32 key metrics. This multifaceted analysis aimed to capture a complete picture of public school effectiveness, examining academic achievement, classroom sizes, funding levels, safety standards, and the credentials held by educators.

Addressing the relationship between educational budgets and student achievement, WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo emphasized that financial resources alone are insufficient to ensure high educational performance. Lupo noted that securing adequate funding remains a fundamental prerequisite for maintaining an effective school system, but simply having large budgets does not automatically produce positive outcomes.

According to Lupo, the way educational funds are distributed and utilized serves as a critical factor in determining the ultimate strength of a public school framework. The analyst pointed out that instructional success relies heavily on the caliber of teachers, the competence of supporting school professionals, and the rigor of the instructional curriculum implemented in classrooms.

A key area where New York lagged behind its top-tier financial ranking was campus safety. The study positioned New York at 19th place nationwide in the school safety category. This mid-tier standing points to measurable challenges regarding student welfare and classroom environments, demonstrating that elevated funding has not completely resolved safety-related concerns in the state.

When evaluated within its broader geographic region, New York trailed behind neighboring states in the Tri-State area that also recorded strong national showings. Connecticut took the second overall position in the country with a score of 69.29, while New Jersey captured third place with a score of 67.41. Both neighbors outperformed New York's eighth-place score of 59.52.

Massachusetts claimed the top spot in the national rankings, finishing first overall with an aggregate score of 74.74. In addition to securing the highest total score, Massachusetts distinguished itself by leading the nation in core academic competencies, ranking first in both student mathematics and reading performance.

The top five public school systems in the ranking featured strong representation from across the Northeast and Midwest. Following Massachusetts at No. 1, Connecticut at No. 2, and New Jersey at No. 3, New Hampshire secured the fourth position with a score of 63.63, while Wisconsin rounded out the top five with an overall score of 60.57.

Conversely, the study highlighted significant educational challenges in several states that landed at the bottom of the national index. West Virginia ranked near the lowest tier in the 47th spot with a score of 40.72, followed by Oregon in 48th place with a score of 40.10, and Oklahoma in 49th place with an overall score of 38.73.

The lowest scores in the entire assessment belonged to Alaska and New Mexico. Alaska placed 50th with a score of 34.68, while New Mexico occupied the final position in the ranking, finishing 51st with an overall score of 29.96. The wide scoring gap between the highest- and lowest-ranking states highlights broad variations in public education quality across the country.

To establish its findings, WalletHub divided its 32 individual metrics into two primary analytical categories: educational quality and school safety. Under the quality umbrella, researchers evaluated critical academic indicators such as student dropout rates, standardized math test results, reading comprehension scores, and Advanced Placement examination performance.

The quality category also examined standardized college admissions metrics, including median SAT and ACT scores, alongside structural environment factors such as pupil-to-teacher ratios. These data points were utilized to assess the depth of instructional support and academic readiness provided to students across different states.

The safety evaluation relied on specific indicators measuring the direct threats students face in school environments. These metrics included data on high school students who were threatened or injured on school grounds, as well as the documented incidence rates of bullying, offering a snapshot of campus climates nationwide.

The comparative dataset was compiled using figures collected as of June 22, 2026. Researchers sourced the underlying statistics from multiple federal agencies and institutional databases, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, creating a comprehensive overview of the condition of public schooling across the nation.
