A Milford man accused of stabbing his friend during an argument regarding the sale of a vape has been transferred to a state facility for a comprehensive mental health evaluation. The legal proceedings against the suspect, identified in court records as Sanchez, were temporarily halted after court clinicians determined that an in-depth psychiatric assessment was necessary before criminal hearings could move forward.

The decision was handed down by Judge Eustis following an initial screening conducted by a court psychologist. Upon reviewing the psychologist’s formal recommendation for further specialized psychiatric examination, the judge ordered Sanchez committed to Bridgewater State Hospital, a specialized state prison facility tasked with handling forensic mental health evaluations for defendants within the Massachusetts judicial system.

As a direct consequence of the commitment order, the court postponed a scheduled dangerousness hearing that had been requested by prosecutors. Dangerousness hearings, which assess whether a defendant poses too substantial a risk to the community to be released on bail pending trial, are typically held early in the arraignment process but are routinely deferred when immediate competency or mental health concerns arise.

Sanchez is now scheduled to make his next appearance in court on September 28. That session will serve a dual purpose on the court’s docket, combining the rescheduled dangerousness hearing with a formal status review regarding the findings of his mental health evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.

The criminal allegations against Sanchez stem from a violent altercation that unfolded on a recent Sunday evening in Milford. Officers with the Milford Police Department were dispatched to the vicinity of Haywood Street at approximately 6:24 p.m. following emergency reports detailing an active physical confrontation and a stabbing in the residential neighborhood.

Upon arriving at the scene on Haywood Street, responding law enforcement officers discovered an 18-year-old male victim suffering from severe and potentially life-threatening stab wounds. Emergency personnel provided immediate aid to stabilize the teenager before he was transported for urgent medical care to address the extensive trauma caused by the weapon.

According to investigative findings released by the Milford Police Department, the suspect and the 18-year-old victim were personal acquaintances who had previously maintained a friendship. However, authorities reported that the two individuals suffered a severe falling out that escalated dramatically over the commercial exchange and sale of a vape device, culminating in the alleged physical attack.

Following the on-scene investigation and the apprehension of the suspect, Milford police filed an array of serious criminal charges against Sanchez. The primary indictment includes assault with intent to murder, which reflects the severity of the alleged attack and the critical nature of the injuries sustained by the young victim during the encounter.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, prosecutors lodged multiple felony weapon offenses against Sanchez. These charges include assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, as well as a separate count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, underscoring the aggravated circumstances surrounding the use of a cutting instrument during the dispute.

Law enforcement authorities also cited Sanchez for minor public order offenses in connection with the street confrontation. He faces additional counts of disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace, stemming from the public disturbance and alarm created on Haywood Street as the argument spilled into the neighborhood environment.

Legal representation for the defendant has been established through defense attorney Stephen Patton. When contacted regarding the status of the case, the postponement of the dangerousness hearing, and the transfer of his client to the state psychiatric facility, Patton could not be reached to provide formal comment on the pending charges.

The role of preliminary psychological evaluations in district court proceedings is vital to ensuring due process, as clinicians must determine whether a defendant understands the nature of the charges and can assist in their own defense. In this case, the court psychologist's determination necessitated an extended period of institutional observation to assess Sanchez's clinical state accurately.

Bridgewater State Hospital will maintain custody of Sanchez while clinical specialists perform a thorough diagnostic workup ahead of the late September court date. The resulting psychiatric report will be delivered directly to the presiding judge and attorneys to inform subsequent legal rulings concerning criminal responsibility and future trial competency.

When Sanchez returns to the courtroom on September 28, the presiding judge will review the clinical findings from Bridgewater State Hospital before deciding how to proceed with the postponed dangerousness hearing. If the defendant is deemed competent to continue, prosecutors and defense counsel will present their respective arguments concerning his custody status and potential pretrial detention.
