Kennedy Center Board Votes for Immediate Closure Amid Renovation Push and Heated Legal Battles

The governing board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has voted to immediately shut down the landmark cultural facility for renovations, according to an individual familiar with the matter. The decision marks the latest escalation in a protracted battle over the future, management, and identity of the nation's premier arts complex in Washington.

The abrupt vote to shutter the venue comes after President Donald Trump and his allies on the board repeatedly warned that the institution is headed toward severe physical deterioration and financial collapse unless major interventions are executed without delay. The board, which is chaired by the president and consists largely of his Cabinet officials and close political allies, has moved aggressively to reshape the facility.

For more than a year, the president has maintained a determined campaign to overhaul the memorial complex. His efforts have focused not only on executing major physical reconstructions and overhauling its traditional performing arts programming, but also on attempting to attach his own name to the historic institution.

Tensions surrounding the center reached a boiling point during Tuesday’s board session, which was attended remotely by both the president and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Lutnick’s wife, Allison Lutnick, serves as a member of the Kennedy Center board.

The remote meeting quickly devolved into open discord. Representative Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat on the board who has previously mounted legal challenges against the administration’s alterations to the complex, released a statement alleging that the president verbally berated her prior to the final vote.

Beatty told reporters that the president appeared to throw a tantrum during the gathering following a string of unfavorable legal rulings regarding the building. She recounted engaging in a heated debate with Trump, stating that he used explicit and descriptive language toward her, prompting her to reply with equal intensity while defending her stance that the administration's actions are unlawful.

The White House quickly pushed back against Beatty’s account of the altercation, shifting the focus to longstanding complaints about the state of the arts complex. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle accused Democratic leaders of neglecting the facility, asserting that Trump had stepped in to rescue the institution while arguing that political opponents resist initiatives that honor the country.

The board’s vote to close the facility followed a significant legal setback earlier in the day. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper issued a ruling once again prohibiting the board from placing Trump's name on the exterior of the building, reinforcing previous court orders that had barred such changes.

In his decision, Judge Cooper emphasized the constitutional and statutory boundaries governing national memorials, stating clearly that the defendants lack the legal authority to construct memorials for Trump or any other individual at the Kennedy Center without the explicit authorization of Congress.

Cooper’s ruling directly addressed a resolution approved by the board in August, which sought to engrave the phrase "Renovated and Restored by President Donald J. Trump" directly beneath the institution's official title on the building’s exterior. In response to the ruling, government attorneys notified the court of their intention to appeal the decision.

The controversy over the facility's naming rights traces back to last December, when the board initially voted to rebrand the landmark as "The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts" and mounted Trump's name onto the facade. In May, Judge Cooper declared that addition unlawful, ordered the lettering removed, and temporarily blocked the administration from shutting down the complex for renovations.

Since the court-mandated removal of the lettering, the exterior section of the building displaying the Kennedy Center's name has remained concealed from public view behind scaffolding covered with heavy tarps.

In legal filings defending the administration's plans, Department of Justice attorneys have painted a grim portrait of the complex's infrastructure. Government lawyers argued that the facility suffers from dangerously dilapidated, decrepit, and outdated conditions alongside severe financial deficits, warning that the living memorial to the 35th president has entered a combined financial and structural death spiral that necessitates an immediate shutdown.

The extensive overhaul plan is backed by substantial federal resources. Last year, Congress approved a $250 million appropriation intended to fund the broad renovation project across the performing arts complex.

However, the timeline for any actual physical work remains deeply uncertain. In a statement posted to Truth Social shortly following Tuesday's board vote, Trump declared that construction will not commence until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit delivers a decision on the Justice Department's appeal regarding the earlier naming injunction.

The president warned that if the appellate court rules against the administration and the decision is not subsequently overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the planned reconstruction and renovation will not occur at all. Trump also claimed to have raised $17 million in outside contributions to help keep the facility afloat, though the specific origins of these funds and the accounts to which they have been directed were not disclosed.
