Groundbreaking Marks Beginning of $14 Million Expansion and Gymnasium Project at White Sulphur Springs Elementary

On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Greenbrier County Schools administrators gathered on-site at White Sulphur Springs Elementary School to participate in a formal groundbreaking ceremony for a major multi-million dollar campus expansion. The ceremonial turning of the soil marked the official launch of an extensive construction and renovation initiative designed to modernize the campus and expand its functional capacity.

With an estimated total cost of $14 million, the comprehensive project will bring an array of long-awaited facilities and structural improvements to the elementary school. At the core of the development is a brand-new multi-purpose room that will house the school's very own dedicated gymnasium, addressing a critical need for standalone athletic and gathering space.

The scope of the $14 million investment extends well beyond the athletic additions, incorporating several sweeping infrastructure improvements across the existing school grounds. Construction plans outline the installation of an updated heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, a completely new roof, a modernized commercial kitchen, redesigned administrative offices, and an expanded parking lot to accommodate staff and visiting families.

For years, administrators, teachers, and students at White Sulphur Springs Elementary School have had to contend with significant space limitations inside the building. The primary hurdle has been the necessity of hosting both physical education classes and student lunch periods inside the very same room, creating constant scheduling challenges and logistical compromises.

The dual-purpose nature of the cafeteria and physical education area required daily transitions to convert the space between a dining room and an active recreational environment. This ongoing arrangement highlighted the pressing need for dedicated spaces that could separately support nutritious meal services and energetic physical activities without interrupting one another.

The school's spatial challenges caught the attention of the West Virginia School Building Authority after state officials saw the shared cafeteria and gymnasium arrangement in action during a site visit. Witnessing the operational hurdles firsthand motivated the authority to step in and initiate the project development process, ensuring the school would receive the funding and support necessary to construct separate spaces for dining and play.

As major structural work gets underway, managing on-site logistics is a primary focus for the architectural and construction teams. The Thrasher Group, which is providing senior architectural oversight for the project, has designated specific zones around the elementary school property to handle construction staging, machinery, and daily building deliveries.

Matt Breakey, the senior architect representing the Thrasher Group, explained that the front area of the school property will function as the central staging area for all upcoming construction activities. Breakey emphasized that the project team is coordinating closely with school administrators and educational staff to minimize classroom disruptions and maintain safe, smooth daily operations for students.

In addition to meeting the internal instructional needs of students and staff during regular school hours, the new multi-purpose facility is planned to serve as a valuable community resource. School leaders aim to make the gym available for neighborhood use during weekends and extracurricular hours, broadening the facility's overall reach.

White Sulphur Springs Elementary School Principal Tina Campbell expressed strong enthusiasm for the broader community benefits the construction project will deliver. Campbell noted that the new gymnasium will give local recreational sports leagues a dedicated venue to host games and athletic practices on the weekends, filling an important need for indoor community recreation space.

Principal Campbell also emphasized that the new multi-purpose space will enhance school-wide engagement throughout the entire academic year. The expanded venue will allow the school to regularly host student assemblies, staff functions, and parent events in a comfortable, purpose-built setting that was previously unavailable on campus.

A significant portion of the $14 million undertaking involves comprehensive modernizations of the facility's underlying mechanical infrastructure. Contractors will upgrade the plumbing networks and HVAC systems throughout the property to ensure the elementary school adheres to modern building codes, air quality requirements, and safety standards.

These extensive utility overhauls are considered critical as the architectural team works to fuse an older, more historic building structure with the brand-new modern additions. Balancing the historical character of the original schoolhouse with modern engineering requirements remains a central goal of the renovation design.

The overall project will also resolve ongoing administrative and vehicular challenges through the construction of a dedicated administrative office suite and an upgraded parking lot. These enhancements are expected to streamline front-office operations, enhance security oversight, and provide improved traffic flow and parking capacity for parents and visitors arriving at the school.

With the groundbreaking successfully completed, the $14 million renovation and expansion effort represents a transformative milestone for White Sulphur Springs Elementary School. Greenbrier County educational leaders look forward to completing the project, which will eliminate longstanding spatial limitations and provide students, teachers, and local residents with a modernized, multi-purpose facility for decades to come.
