Four Years After Slaying of West Hollywood Chef, Family and LAPD Renew Search for Suspects in Mistaken-Identity Murder

Four years after a rising Los Angeles chef was ambushed and gunned down outside a South Los Angeles residence, law enforcement investigators and his grieving family are renewing their urgent appeals to help locate the three unidentified gunmen responsible. The fatal shooting, which took place in the summer of 2022, remains unsolved despite ongoing investigative efforts by local homicide detectives.

The victim, 40-year-old James Henry Hall III, had built a successful culinary career in the Los Angeles restaurant scene. Employed as a chef at Lisa Vanderpump’s popular West Hollywood venue, Tom Tom, Hall was widely admired by peers and loved ones for his deep dedication to his craft and his infectious enthusiasm in the kitchen.

The tragic sequence of events began late on the night of June 14, 2022. Hall and his girlfriend had traveled together to pick up a late dinner from a local Jack in the Box before driving back to her residential neighborhood in South Los Angeles.

Upon arriving back at the residence, the couple parked their vehicle along West 83rd Street, just off Figueroa Street. Hall was sitting in the driver’s seat while his girlfriend remained seated in the front passenger seat, unaware of the danger awaiting them on the street outside.

As Hall began to exit the parked car, extreme violence unfolded without warning. Three armed men suddenly leapt from an SUV positioned further down the roadway, quickly converged on the vehicle, and opened fire in a coordinated ambush.

According to LAPD investigators, the three assailants fired a barrage of roughly 30 rounds directly toward Hall. Hall's girlfriend managed to survive the sudden gunfire without sustaining physical injuries, but Hall was fatally struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the attack, Los Angeles Police Department homicide detectives determined that the deadly shooting was almost certainly a catastrophic case of mistaken identity, sparked by nothing more than the color of Hall's footwear.

Detectives pointed out that the specific South Los Angeles neighborhood where the ambush occurred on West 83rd Street is an area firmly claimed and controlled by the Hoover street gang. On the night of the shooting, Hall was wearing a pair of red sneakers.

Within local gang dynamics, the color red is traditionally and strongly associated with the rival Bloods street gang. LAPD Homicide Detective Dexter Navarro explained that the armed suspects likely spotted Hall's red footwear and immediately made a fatal, erroneous assumption regarding his identity.

"So we think, at the time, that James was mistaken for a rival gang member that resided in this area," Detective Navarro stated during the ongoing investigation, explaining the tragic rationale behind the rapid escalation of gunfire.

Both homicide detectives and Hall’s family have repeatedly underscored that Hall had no ties whatsoever to criminal street gangs. Detective Navarro and Hall's mother, Yvette Hall, both verified that the 40-year-old chef led an honest life dedicated to his profession and was murdered entirely by mistake.

A key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation is surveillance imagery showing the vehicle used by the three suspects during the fatal encounter. Law enforcement released images showing a dark-colored Infiniti SUV equipped with distinctive chrome trim, though street cameras were unfortunately unable to record the vehicle's license plate number.

For Hall’s surviving relatives, the four years that have elapsed since the murder have done nothing to alleviate the profound grief of their loss. His mother expressed the enduring emotional toll of the tragedy, reflecting on the immense sorrow that accompanies losing a son to sudden street violence.

The victim's relatives remain convinced that someone in the community holds the critical information needed to break the case wide open. Hall’s aunt, Sandra Hunter, highlighted that community awareness is essential to identifying the individuals who were inside the dark Infiniti SUV on the night of the attack.

"Somebody knows something, somebody's seen something, somebody heard something," Hunter emphasized, urging anyone with firsthand knowledge or neighborhood tips to step forward and assist the police.

Yvette Hall echoed that sentiment, pleading with witnesses to overcome their fear and contact authorities directly or through an intermediary so the family can finally receive closure and justice for her slain son.

The Los Angeles Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding the June 14, 2022, killing of James Henry Hall III or the dark Infiniti SUV to contact the department at (877) LAPD-247.
