Corpus Christi Man Booked into Detention Center Following Hospital Release in Officer-Involved Shooting Case

A 44-year-old man who was shot by law enforcement during an armed confrontation earlier this month in Corpus Christi has been formally booked into local custody following his discharge from medical care. Authorities confirmed that the suspect was processed into the municipal jail after recovering from gunshot wounds sustained during the violent encounter with patrol officers.

The individual, identified by local law enforcement officials as Blaise Hermsen, was transferred to the City Detention Center over the weekend. He had remained under medical supervision and law enforcement guard since the shooting incident took place on the evening of Sept. 5.

Following his release from the local medical facility, Hermsen faces a litany of serious state charges stemming from both the initial disturbance and the subsequent armed encounter with police. The charges formally lodged against him include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, discharge of a firearm in certain municipalities, evading arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The sequence of events leading up to the gunfire began when emergency dispatchers received an urgent call regarding a disturbance involving a weapon shortly after 7:20 p.m. on Sept. 5. Responding patrol units were initially directed to the 300 block of Parr Street to assess and neutralize an active public safety threat reported by community members.

According to preliminary investigative accounts provided by the Corpus Christi Police Department, the disturbance originated with an aggressive confrontation directed at a local resident and her pet. Investigators determined that a male suspect had discharged a firearm directly at a woman's dog before escalating the situation further by leveling armed threats against the woman herself.

The reported gunfire in a residential area and the direct threats against a civilian prompted an immediate and widespread search across surrounding neighborhood streets. Responding units quickly saturated the surrounding corridors in an effort to locate the armed suspect before further violence could unfold.

Officers actively searching the vicinity located a man matching the suspect's description a short distance away in the 300 block of Port Avenue. Upon identifying Hermsen in the area, patrol personnel attempted to make formal contact with him to conduct an investigative stop and assess the weapon complaint.

Rather than complying with the commands of the approaching officers, Hermsen attempted to elude law enforcement by fleeing the immediate area on a bicycle. The sudden evasive action prompted officers to initiate a pursuit while simultaneously coordinating with secondary units to converge on the suspect’s path.

The brief pursuit concluded when additional patrol officers arrived in the vicinity to assist with cutting off potential escape routes. As additional units established a perimeter and surrounded the area, Hermsen brought the bicycle to a halt, bringing the pursuit to an abrupt standstill in front of the assembled law enforcement personnel.

The situation escalated into a life-threatening confrontation when Hermsen suddenly produced a handgun in the presence of the responding officers. The brandishing of the lethal weapon created an immediate threat to the lives of both the patrol personnel on the scene and any potential bystanders in the surrounding area.

In response to the weapon being presented, a single Corpus Christi police officer discharged their duty firearm, striking Hermsen at least once. The single officer's gunfire neutralized the active threat, causing the suspect to drop the firearm and collapse to the ground.

Immediately following the discharge of the weapon, officers on scene transitioned into emergency life-saving protocols. Responding personnel administered immediate first-aid procedures and worked to stabilize the wounded suspect while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical services personnel.

Emergency medical crews were dispatched to the scene, taking over medical care and transporting Hermsen to an area hospital for urgent surgical and medical treatment. He remained hospitalized under continuous police custody for several days until doctors deemed him stable enough for formal discharge and jail processing.

Upon his discharge from the medical center on Saturday, Hermsen was taken into custody by transport officers and delivered directly to the City Detention Center to await magistrate proceedings. The extensive array of charges filed reflects both the danger posed to community members during the initial firearm discharge on Parr Street and the subsequent armed resistance against responding officers on Port Avenue.

The officer-involved shooting itself remains under active administrative and criminal review by internal affairs and investigative divisions within the department. Standard protocols mandate a thorough investigation into all incidents involving the use of deadly force by municipal law enforcement personnel to ensure full accountability and adherence to established department policies.

Hermsen remains held in local custody as the broader investigation into the entire Sept. 5 sequence of events continues to proceed through the municipal and regional criminal justice systems.
