Cairo Man Admits to Murder of Father in Greene County Court Following Elaborate Cover-Up

A 46-year-old Greene County man has formally admitted in court to killing his elderly father, concluding a major phase of a harrowing homicide case that began with a missing person report in the town of Cairo. Rodney Pitt appeared before a judge in Greene County Court on Tuesday, entering a guilty plea to second-degree murder and several related felony counts in connection with the death of 69-year-old Roger Pitt Sr.

The admission marks a dramatic turn in the criminal proceedings, as Rodney Pitt chose to rescind his earlier claims of innocence and enter formal admissions of guilt. In addition to the top charge of second-degree murder, the defendant pleaded guilty to counts of conspiracy, tampering with physical evidence, and the unlawful concealment of a human corpse. Under the terms of the legal proceedings, Pitt now faces a statutory prison term of 19 years to life.

The resolution of Pitt’s case closely follows a similar legal development involving his co-defendant, Drew White. Approximately two months prior to Pitt’s court appearance, White, who is the boyfriend of Pitt’s minor daughter, also withdrew his previous not guilty plea. White pleaded guilty to an identical slate of charges, including second-degree murder, conspiracy, physical evidence tampering, and corpse concealment for his direct participation in the homicide and subsequent cover-up.

A third individual connected to the household, Rodney Pitt’s wife Tania Pitt, faces separate criminal charges stemming from the extensive efforts to mislead investigators and destroy evidence. Prosecutors charged Tania Pitt with conspiracy, perjury, and tampering with physical evidence. Unlike her husband and White, she has maintained a plea of not guilty and remains released from custody as her legal case moves through the court system.

The multi-agency investigation into the family began in mid-November of last year when Roger Pitt Sr. was officially reported missing. The initial report was filed on Nov. 18 after the victim's sister grew increasingly alarmed by his sudden absence and made numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact him. Family members initially claimed to responding police officers that the elderly patriarch had simply packed his belongings and left the region on his own volition following domestic friction.

That initial narrative quickly unraveled under investigative scrutiny when law enforcement authorities searched the family's shared residential property located on Old State Route 145 in Cairo. Instead of finding evidence of a voluntary departure, investigators uncovered the senior Pitt’s remains buried in a shallow grave on the grounds of the home. Forensic analysis confirmed that the victim had suffered fatal trauma weeks prior to the missing person report being filed.

According to the grand jury indictment returned in the case, Roger Pitt Sr. was violently killed between Oct. 16 and Oct. 18. Prosecutors revealed that the fatal injuries were inflicted with a box-cutter-type blade that was used to cut the victim's throat. The grand jury findings outlined an act of violence that occurred inside the residence that the victim shared with his son and extended family members.

Court documents and prosecutorial filings established that the deadly confrontation stemmed from escalating household tensions. Investigators determined that Rodney Pitt attacked his father during a bitter dispute concerning unpaid household bills and expenses. Compounding the financial friction was Roger Pitt Sr.’s vehement disapproval of White residing in the home alongside Rodney Pitt’s underage daughter.

In the immediate aftermath of the fatal assault, Rodney Pitt and White engaged in a coordinated effort to eliminate all signs of the homicide. Authorities detailed how the pair worked together to transport the victim's body outside and bury it in the backyard in an attempt to hide the crime. Inside the Old State Route 145 residence, both men conducted an extensive cleanup operation to scrub and remove bloodstains left by the violent attack.

The concealment efforts extended beyond cleaning physical biological evidence at the primary crime scene. According to the indictment, Rodney Pitt and White took deliberate measures to eradicate the victim's personal identity. The pair systematically destroyed Roger Pitt Sr.’s essential documents, including his Social Security card, official driver's license, and other personal identification papers, to prevent authorities from tracking his status.

Further demonstrating the calculated nature of the cover-up, investigators discovered that the license plate belonging to the victim's personal vehicle had been removed and concealed inside the structural wall of the residence. This concealment was designed to prevent law enforcement from identifying the vehicle during the initial weeks of the missing person investigation.

The disposal of the victim's vehicle formed another key component of the state's case against the defendants. A few days following the October killing, family members arranged to permanently get rid of Roger Pitt Sr.’s 1987 Mercedes-Benz. While she was not charged with participating in the actual murder, Tania Pitt was accused of actively assisting Rodney Pitt and White in transporting the classic automobile to a local scrapyard so it could be crushed and destroyed.

As the missing person investigation intensified throughout November, members of the household allegedly provided false statements under oath to divert police attention away from the property. On Nov. 25, roughly a month after the murder occurred, Rodney Pitt gave a statement to detectives claiming that his father had become enraged following an argument and abruptly sped away from the house in his Mercedes-Benz.

The following day, on Nov. 26, Tania Pitt provided a separate fabricated story to investigators in an effort to corroborate the timeline of her father-in-law being alive. She claimed that she had personally administered daily medications to Roger Pitt Sr. on Nov. 18. Furthermore, she told authorities that Rodney, Roger, and an unnamed third companion had taken the Mercedes-Benz on an overnight hunting trip between Nov. 16 and Nov. 17, assertions that directly contradicted the indictment's findings that the victim had already been dead for an entire month.

Following their guilty pleas to murder and evidence concealment, both Rodney Pitt and Drew White are scheduled to appear in Greene County Court for formal sentencing on Nov. 10. The two men remain remanded in custody without bail at the Greene County jail as they await their final prison terms, bringing an end to the complex criminal prosecution surrounding the death of Roger Pitt Sr.
